Porcupine Plain is focusing on economic development

The Town of Porcupine Plain recently made a big announcement in its drive to focus on economic development and strengthening local business.

The town announced its Micro-Grant Program for small businesses. Successful applicants will be eligible for up to $1,000 in marketing expenses to be covered.

Community Development Officer Koral Kriger said the program is a combination of efforts to strengthen the local economy in the Northeast.

“The micro-grant program is a partnership between the Porcupine Plan Economic Development Committee (EDC) and Community Futures Newsask in Tisdale,” she said.

The program was modelled after similar ones offered in the northeast like Hudson Bay.

The real push came from seeing local businesses battle with the lasting effects of COVID and the pressures of inflation.

“As a community that relies heavily on tourism, marketing and advertising are important but when all those other operating costs are increasing the marketing budget is one of the first things to go.”

The grant will help cover the costs for all marketing expenses like Online Marketing, Social Media Advertising, Website Renewal/Development, Print or Radio Ads, Signs and Brochures.

Those interested in applying are encouraged to do so and submit receipts prior to the deadline of March 31.

The EDC took into consideration how to help local businesses promote themselves and encourage both locals and those interested in making the trip out to the town.

“We’re very warm and welcoming. Our businesses really try to cater to our customers and our tourists.”
