Village of Weldon recovering after losing well-known community member during stabbing attack

It’s been about seven months since 11 people were killed during the James Smith Cree Nation stabbing spree, but there is another community that’s still trying to recover from the attack.

While 10 of the murders happened on the First Nation, one took place in the Village of Weldon.

Wesley Petterson, who was the oldest victim at 78 years old, was killed in his home.

“He was a well-liked gentleman, always did things around the community, he was a really well-respected person,” said Mayor Ron Clayton.

Petterson was known in the community for helping others, his love of cats, and his homemade Saskatoon berry jam.

While the initial shock of his death has passed for most residents, Clayton explained they’d still like to know why such a good man had his life taken away.

“I don’t think we’ll ever know why, but answers would be nice,” he said.

Clayton mentioned you’ll still see Petterson’s grandson from time to time in the village. The two were sharing a place at the time and he was reportedly in the basement when his grandfather was attacked.

“I feel for that boy and what he went through,” added Clayton.

Though he didn’t go into details, the village has had talks about how they wanted to properly recognize Petterson. At this time, all Clayton would say is there are a few memorial items in the works.

As for the rest of the community, Clayton said everyone is doing better. Unsurprisingly, it’s still something you’ll hear people take about if you just take a stroll across the village.

The one thing most people currently agree on is how much time has already passed, though many would argue it wasn’t a fast transition.

“It doesn’t feel like seven months,” he said.
