The Melfort and District Museum’s Settler Village is now officially open for summer.

The over 20 building displays will have visitors taking a step into the rich history of the Melfort area.

Museum curator Gailmarie Anderson told northeastNOW that even though the doors officially opened Thursday, they are already feeling the rush.

“We have been going crazy getting everything ready. June is crazy with school tours almost every day, some twice a day.”

In addition to preparing for a large amount of traffic, staff and volunteers have been working behind the scenes to set up new displays to celebrate Melfort’s history.

Those displays include a walk through different graduating classes in Melfort, information on the Jewish community that has settled in the area and a brand new building.

“We have our volunteers that are just finishing the touches on the dentist’s office building that they built this winter inside the all-season shop. They are going to be moving it to the Settler Village,” Anderson explained.

Another feature that locals can feel excited about is that the Genealogical Society has transferred some of its materials to the museum. This allows those with roots in the area to explore their family history.

For those who have never been to the museum before and are interested in taking a tour, there are two options to choose from.

The first tour includes a step into the settler village, visitors will get the chance to explore the various building and see how things used to operate while connecting them to their own family history.

The second tour is the agricultural tour which pays homage to when the museum was first opened as the Agricultural Museum of Melfort.

“We believe in telling the story behind things. So that’s why we hire our students, and they train so that they can get the story behind things,” Anderson said.

Not only are people in Melfort coming in for their summer tour but Anderson explained she has noticed more people making the trip to see what the city has to offer.

“I just want to welcome people to our museum. I think it’s one of the crown jewels of Melfort and certainly, we’re on the tourism radar for the northeast.”
