Tisdale football player to compete at nationals

For the second year in a row, Team Saskatchewan will have a Tisdale local on their squad when they compete at the National Women’s Under-18 Championship.

Grade 11 girl, Shayden Magnus will dawn the provincial flag in Ottawa, from July 23 to July 29.

“I’m very excited,” Magnus told northeastNOW. “I think it’ll be a great opportunity. Last year I had a lot of fun and I think it’ll be really cool to go somewhere further this time.”

Magnus was also a part of the inaugural U18 tournament, alongside fellow Tisdale native Tilka Chapman, last year in Regina.

She said after playing in it last year, she knew she wanted to come back. That led her to tryouts in both Saskatoon and Regina, before ultimately making the squad.

Magnus explained last year’s experience left her with a completely new perspective and level of confidence, which she will use heading into next month.

“Last time, it was just kind of unknown ground as to what was going to happen, but this year, I know all the coaching staff and our managers, and lots of the players as well. It’ll just give me a little bit more confidence to go and talk to the new players and obviously better setup.”

This will be the farthest Magnus has ever travelled for football, as with her Regina Riot club, she’s only travelled as far as Winnipeg.

Along with that, there is set to be a handful of more teams (more provinces included this year), which she said is only adding to the level of excitement.

“It’ll be a lot of fun, I’m very grateful to have had this opportunity and just very grateful for how fast women’s football has been growing in our province alone. I’m just excited for the years to come when hopefully there’ll be every province that has a team and then this will one day be just as big as the men’s under-18 tournament.”

Training camp for Team Sask will start around the middle of July, as they practice for a few days before heading off to the nation’s capital.

The group’s first game will be against the defending champions (Team Alberta), who defeated Magnus and Saskatchewan in last year’s championship final.

“Thank you to all of my coaches that have helped me get this far and everyone else that has helped me along my journey,” she added.
