Weekend clean up

Nipawin crews keeping busy following storm, clean up continues

Jul 3, 2023 | 1:54 PM

Crews in the Nipawin area are keeping busy following the storm that rolled through on Saturday.

On top of uprooted trees and downed power lines, crews are also dealing with a major gas line break as well as a house fire over the weekend.

The gas line that broke also was a partial cause to why a local restaurant was forced to close for the foreseeable future. The restaurant took to Facebook to announce the news.

“We sustained damage at The Dam Smokehouse during last nights storm,” the post read. “Major gas line break and make up air unit torn off foundation and destroyed – – closed indefinitely until further notice. Hoping for a miracle.”

The Nipawin Evergreen Golf Course was also affected by the storm as the course was shut down on Sunday to allow crews to remove downed trees and make repairs to the course.

Before the storm even hit the area, the Nipawin Fire Department was busy with a structure fire in the RM of Torch River.

Crews were called to the blaze on Canada Day and upon arrival, they found the structure aflame. Thankfully, the building was already partially demolished and no people, pets, or valuables were inside.

The storm originated in Central Alberta and produced heavy rain, hail, and strong winds gusting to 119km/h.
