Melfort RCMP officially hires new detachment commander

The Melfort RCMP detachment has officially hired its new leader, however, they won’t be taking over right away.

The local detachment has had Geoff Applegate at the helm, in the interim, and that is expected to continue for the next couple of months.

“Kind of expecting probably sometime late this summer or early this fall that he’ll be in place and take command of the Melfort detachment,” Applegate told northeastNOW.

“It was welcomed news for our detachment that we’re able to go through the promotion process and identify Sergeant Case as the new staff sergeant to be named for Melfort here. The word has got around, our office is aware now and we’re all excited about his impending arrival.”

Sgt. Ryan Case will be the new boss and has been ‘temporarily seconded’ for the last six months to Regina, as a district manager for the south.

Before that, he had over seven years of commander experience with the Indian Head RCMP, and more than 20 years of service overall.

“He’s a very sharp guy and a good manager, so we’re really getting a quality individual coming in here, and we’re all just really happy and excited, waiting for his arrival,” added Applegate.

Case will be coming up with his wife and children, with his kids set to be enrolled in school here, once they get settled.

According to Applegate, Case and his family loves this area, and are excited to call Melfort home.

“I had a chance to actually speak to him earlier this week when he was in our detachment, and just kind of met some of our staff. They’re very excited to get involved in the community, so it’s really welcome news for us, and I think it’ll really be great for Melfort and the area,” he said.

Once Case arrives, Applegate will return to his corporal role, which is something he is looking forward to.

In the meantime, Applegate is focused on continuing to get the job done, staying the course, and just enjoying what has been a welcomed opportunity.

“I have to say the last few months have been a good learning experience for me. I think for me and the rest of the team we just have to keep delivering our services over the summer months here,” he said. “I think it was a bit of a blessing and will provide me with a little more confidence going forward, as far as looking to be a commander somewhere, if that’s something I want to do.”
