Local senior hockey team looking to return to the ice

The Town of Nipawin could soon see some extra high-level hockey that’s not the Nipawin Hawks.

The Nipawin Knights senior hockey team is looking to return to its former existence and get back onto the ice once again.

“Just another team alongside the Hawks here, it’s kind of interesting because you get some local guys playing on the team and some guys that outgrew the Hawks and things like that, and it draws a different crowd, that’s for sure,” said team member, Tyler Paslawski.

“Lots of local teams to play against so there are good rivalries throughout the league and just gets the guys out, gets them some exercise and gets that competitive lifestyle back in their lives.”

Should the Knights be able to form a team again, they would participate in the Wheatland Senior Hockey League.

The league currently features teams such as the St. Brieux/Lake Lenore Rivals, Tisdale Ramblers, Hudson Bay Hunters, Porcupine Plain Blues, and the Bruno T-Birds.

“There are a few guys back in town that used to play some hockey and have been travelling the last couple of years to some other local senior teams, but it’s just a little bit of a far drive,” added Paslawski.

“It’d be nice to get back kind of more localized in the Nipawin area, play with some guys that we used to know and stuff like that, with a lot of new faces in there as well. A lot of the guys who play in the area would like to play senior hockey, but they don’t want to travel that extra distance, so trying to get the Knights fired back up here again.”

The Knights would need at least 20 players signed up and committed in the next week or two, and according to Paslawski, they are quite close to that number.

Ideally, however, they could get 30 or 40 guys signed up and do a bit of a camp to make some cuts and be as competitive a team as possible.

Paslawski said for anyone who is interested to message him on Facebook or reach him at (306) 920-8992.

“It’s good camaraderie with the guys in the locker room and stuff. It’s a lot of fun, it’s competitive, it’s entertaining hockey, and it’s a pretty tight-knit league now,” he told northeastNOW. “It’s just a great time to get out with the guys, and a good way to keep your health in check and keep the blood flowing.”

The club will also be looking for a coach or two, as well as a general manager to run the team.
