Carlton Trail College kicking off 50th-anniversary celebrations

Aug 22, 2023 | 4:27 PM

The 2023/24 academic year marks Carlton Trail College’s (CTC) 50th anniversary, and the celebration has begun.

Earlier Tuesday (Aug. 22) the post-secondary institution hosted two come-and-go open houses, with one at their campus in Wynyard (9:30 a.m. – 11 a.m.), and the other at their campus in Watrous (2 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.).

“We’re excited to celebrate 50 years of serving our larger northern and east-central region with educational and training services… and we want to really make sure that we stand up and acknowledge that we are only successful because of the folks within our region who have supported us over the years,” said CTC advancement and external affairs director, Jennifer Brooks.

“Our community appreciation week events are a way for us to thank our many community partners and municipalities that we operate in, as well as students, staff, alumni, and all of those who have had a connection to the college.”

Events will continue throughout the next two days, as their Humboldt campus hosts an open house (11-3) and free barbeque (11-1) on Wednesday, while the Four Winds Learning Centre in Punnichy does the same on Thursday (same hours).

All community appreciation week events are free and open to the public, with a silver collection for donations being taken in support of the college’s scholarship program, along with door prizes and facility tours available.

“Current students, former students, and anyone thinking about further education or training are welcome to attend our open house and community appreciation events this week,” Brooks added. “Facility tours will really showcase some of our classrooms and how we’re wired up to deliver a number of our skilled trades and other adult learning opportunities.”

The college is also continuing to work on its 50th-anniversary legacy initiative and is asking the public to provide insight about them and the impact they have had within the region.

This insight will help inform a collaborative, legacy arts project to mark the college’s history while looking ahead to the next 50 years.

“We are looking to celebrate what we’ve been able to accomplish over the last 50 years, and we are also looking to create something in collaboration with our communities to celebrate how we have made an impact within the region through education over the last 50 years,” Brooks told northeastNOW.

People are encouraged to complete a simple, three-question survey to help this initiative. The deadline to participate is Friday (Aug. 25).

A “Legacy Leaf” activity will also be made available to those attending community appreciation week events.

College-inspired words, phrases or decorations are encouraged to be left on paper as “legacy leaves” that will be collected and used as part of the legacy arts initiative.

“We are asking people to think about phrases or positive aspects about education or experiences they’ve had with the college to help our artists craft a legacy item that we will then be able to showcase within our region for years to come,” explained Brooks.

In addition, the College will be sharing its history, photos and other notable activities weekly through its social media channels as part of a broader “50 Moments Over 50 Years” information-sharing campaign.
