Another graduating Melfort Mustang has committed to playing their post-secondary hockey career in Saskatchewan.

Defenceman Leyton Holoien has committed to play for the University of Regina Cougars this fall.

The Emerald Park native joins former Melfort captain Ben Tkachuk (University of Saskatchewan Huskies) in Canada West and USports, as the two are scheduled to face off against each other to begin the season on Sept. 8th.

Holoein joined the Mustangs as a rookie in 2020 but only suited up twice due to the COVID-shortened season.

The six-foot-six d-man followed that with four goals and 17 assists in 52 games during the 2021-22 season.

He then became one of the best offensive defencemen in the league during his final year with the blue and green (22/23) finishing the regular season with the seventh most points among blueliners with 39 (50 games played, 10 goals and 29 assists).

He would also go on to add four helpers in ten postseason games.

Prior to joining the SJHL, Holoein was playing in the Alberta Minor Hockey League (AMHL). In 29 games with the Red Deer Chiefs U18 AAA squad in 2019/20, he scored once while adding three apples.

Holoein also played four seasons with the Prairie Storm U15 and U18 AA teams in Balgonie from 2015-2018, before he played for the Ponoka Stampeders and Central Alberta Selects U18 AA team.

The University of Regina Cougars finished tied for seventh in the Canada West standings during the 2022-23 season.
