Mustangs Week

Melfort Mustangs using event-filled week to kickoff 2023/24 season

Sep 20, 2023 | 10:05 AM

The Melfort Mustangs’ regular season begins this weekend and the team is including as many community members as they can to join in on the celebrations and kick off the 2023/24 year just right.

The organization has dubbed the seven-day stretch as Mustangs’ week, which began Monday at the Brunswick Tennis Courts.

“Trevor (Blevins) came in and sat down and we kind of discussed and he said we should have something to kind of kick off this week and get the team involved to get people knowing who the 2023/24 team is. That was kind of what sparked this week, especially since fall supper is this weekend, so it just kind of all fit together really nicely,” said director of marketing and office administration, Hana Grace.

From 4-5:30 p.m. on Sept. 18, the boys played road hockey with handfuls of younger kids, splitting them into two groups, one slightly younger and one slightly older.

Grace explained that road hockey was something the team had done before and now it was just about incorporating it into the week. She believes there were about 30 kids who participated.

“It was great, it was a lot of fun to see the little kids come out and play, as the guys were hyping them up and showing them how to do slap shots and whatever. The younger ones could kind of just learn more than anything else, and not get barreled over by the bigger kids. For the older kids, it’s a different interaction, so it was a lot of fun and a good turnout.”

The group will now turn their attention to tonight (Wednesday) as from 5:30-6:30 p.m. they will host an opportunity to skate with them at the Northern Lights Palace.

Grace added interactions like these are ones she remembers from her time as a kid back home, and that it’s likely the same for a lot of others.

“It’s a fundamental memory for a lot of these kids, and then when the season rolls around, they can say I really liked that number, and then you have that bond for the whole season. Wyatt Day had a kid who loved him last year and he gave him a jersey for Christmas, these boys really are our community and they bring people together.”

Following Wednesday night, the club plans to visit Maude Burke and Reynolds, as well as hopefully Brunswick, during their recesses on Thursday.

The Stangs then have back-to-back games on Friday and Saturday, before hosting their annual Fall Supper on Sunday.

And as much as Grace knows the importance of getting involved with the kids, she knows it’s also good for the guys to have some interactions with adults.

“It’s a nice time of year to get together and share a meal with everyone,” she told northeastNOW.

Friday’s game is Melfort’s home opener as they host the La Ronge Ice Wolves, before heading out on the road to Manitoba the very next day to face the Flin Flon Bombers.
