Mustangs conquer Bombers in overtime thriller

The Melfort Mustangs are undefeated after the first weekend of the 2023/24 SJHL season.

The Stangs had an early season thriller in extra time as they travelled to Flin Flon on a Saturday night.

The Bombers were taken down just 15 seconds into overtime during their home opener, courtesy of Aidyn Hutchinson.

“Hutch came back on the backcheck, picked up the puck and then gave it to (Zac) Somers, who fed him back door and that was it, so it’s awesome and a good character win,” explained assistant coach, Tye Scherger.

Somers had an assist on both Mustangs’ goals, as Melfort picked up the 2-1 win.

Ryan Duguay had the equalizer just 25 seconds into the third period after the Bombers led 1-0 after two periods off the stick of Trevor Stenglein.

James Venne picked up his second victory of the season after stopping 35 of 36 shots.

Scherger added on a night when both goaltenders were solid (as Harmon Laser-Hume stopped 37 of 39 for Flin Flon), it’s nice to have a backstop that can keep you in the game no matter what.

“If it wasn’t for him, that would have been a different story tonight. I mean, he stood on his head from the start to the end and you know, very honoured to have him back as well, so that’s awesome.”

Melfort was 0 for 7 on the powerplay, while Flin Flon was 0 for 6 on the man advantage.

The Mustangs are now 0 for 12 in those situations so far this season, however, according to Scherger that’s not entirely surprising early in the year, but it’s something they will definitely be working on in practice.

The blue and green will now play their next four contests at home as they host the Notre Dame Hounds Friday at the Palace for KidSport night.

“Get comfortable, get our fans back into it and go for a four-game stretch here and hopefully, keep going and getting all the wins,” Scherger concluded.

Puck drop is slated for 7:30 p.m.
