Upgrades near completion at the Pelican Narrow airport

Sep 26, 2023 | 10:59 AM

Pelican Narrows is almost done with upgrades to their airport thanks to a grant from the provincial government.

The Government of Saskatchewan announced in June that they would be committing more than $1.45 million to help provide improvements to the airport.

Highway Minister Lori Carr said in a statement that airports are vital for northern communities.

“They facilitate the transport of crucial goods, ensuring swift access to medical facilities for people in need. During specific seasons, a local airport often becomes the sole gateway to and from these northern communities,” she said.

The improvements will include a paved runway, taxiway and apron.

Warman Construction commenced work on improvements in June and is set to complete the project by the end of September with the help of Associated Engineering.

With the aviation industry playing a critical role in the economic prosperity of northern Saskatchewan, the improvements will serve as a way to help improve the tourism, energy, mining and forest industries.

Not only will this provide an economic boost but there will be improvements to air ambulance services to provide life-saving services and the justice system to bring courtrooms to the North.

With more than 16 northern airports under the Ministry of Highways, the Government of Saskatchewan has committed $89.4 million in this year’s budget to help ensure that air transport is reliable across the province.
