Melfort Kinettes celebrate 75 years in the community

The Melfort Kinettes celebrated their 75 anniversary this past weekend by taking a look at the club’s history.

Between current members and alumni, 85 people came from far and wide to Melfort’s Legion Hall to take a trip down memory lane to celebrate the club that was originally founded in 1948.

Life member of the Melfort Kinettes Lori Friesen told northeastNOW that she has been involved with the club since 1994 and has seen the good the club does in the community.

“When the city needs help, they kind of know who to talk to if there are things that need to get done. That’s the kin motto, serving the community’s greatest needs so that,” she said.

Some of the highlights in that time include being involved in TeleMiracle, helping with playgrounds, walking trails and fundraising for the Northern Lights Palace.

The club also celebrated a long-time member, Veronica Fedorychka with her life membership at the meeting. Life membership in a Kin club means that the member has been a part of the organization for 10 years.

Something the club is doing for the first time in its 75-year history is having a permanent meeting place for members.

Recently the club took over the old chamber conference building in Spruce Haven Park which Friesen explained is currently under renovation.

“We are going to have a meeting space. It’s nice to have our own place. We have all this memorabilia but it is all put into boxes, so we are hoping to be able to put some of that out so people can see what we’ve done over the years.”

Not only is the club looking back, they are looking forward and are hoping to welcome new members.

Friesen said not only is the club offering members a chance to be involved in the community and make friends but also to work on personal and professional growth.

“You learn how to chair a meeting, how to chair a project, how to be on a project. People use what they personally are strong enough to bring to the club but also use it as a way to learn about how to do new things.”

For those looking to join the club, you must be 19. The club holds one meeting a month for both a bit of socialization and business.
