Buckberger recognized again; Hawks hit highway to Kindersley

Fresh off a Hawks win over Notre Dame and another two-point performance from Ronan Buckberger the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) named the Saskatoon product the player of the week on Monday.

The honour is the second weekly award for the Ohio State committed defenceman. Nipawin Head Coach and General Manager Tad Kozun said having the 17-year-old in black-and-gold is exciting for both the team and league.

“It’s a lot of fun to be part of it,” Kozun said of his start rookie defenceman. “I know we’re one stop on his journey but it’s truly an honour to be a part of it and we’re going to help him any way we can.”

Coming off a revengeful 6-1 win over the Hounds on Sunday, after a loss in Notre Dame and another versus Flin Flon Tuesday, Kozun was happy with the bounce back effort, plus the play of Alex Bernauer and Artem Hrabovetskyi who both scored in their Nipawin debuts.

It was nice, we knew we needed a bounce back after a couple losses and I thought the group came out and did a great job. We got off to a quick start, the two new guys stepped right in and helped right away and we’re definitely looking forward to continuing that today,” Kozun said.

Back in late September Nipawin clobbered the Klippers 7-1 at the Centennial Arena. Each team has made significant changes since and Kozun expects Kindersley to do their best to enact their own revenge after a lopsided result in the season series opener.

“Having close to a full lineup now, we’re looking ready to go. We know Kindersley will be a much different team. We just talked about how we wanted redemption against Notre Dame, I am sure the Klippers are looking for redemption on home ice against us today, so we must be ready to go from puck drop,” Kozun concluded.

Faceoff is 7:30 p.m., the pregame show of Duplex Furniture and Appliances Hawks Hockey begins at 7:15 p.m. on 750 Beach Radio.
