Mustangs seeking revenge against rival Hawks

Nov 17, 2023 | 4:53 PM

Melfort will battle Nipawin for the second time in the last seven days Friday night at the Northern Lights Palace.

The Hawks stole two points from the Mustangs on Saturday at the Cage in Nipawin, as Melfort gave up a late 3-1 lead, with just eight minutes remaining in the third period.

According to Stangs’ assistant captain Aidyn Hutchinson, he liked the way his team played that particular night and blamed discipline in the clutch as the result of the overtime defeat.

“I think a big positive in that game was how well we played and how we controlled the puck, but I think we got to tone it down on the penalties a little bit, a couple of dumb penalties cost us but that’ll happen in games and just got to battle through the adversity that we get and get a win,” he told northeastNOW.

After a blistering 7-0 start to the season, before reaching the 9-1 mark, the Blue and Green have failed to come out on top in consecutive contests.

Injuries are a part of their recent 3-5-2 stretch, in which a top player like Hutchinson was out for three weeks.

He and others have since returned to the lineup, as the Stangs have then gone 2-1-1.

That one regulation loss came on Wednesday at the SJHL Showcase (where Melfort went 1-1) as the Yorkton Terriers handed the Mustangs their worst loss of the season, 5-2 (one of the goals was an empty netter).

According to the 2003-born St. Albert product, his group needs to find a way to become what they once were, back at the beginning of the season.

“We’re just trying to focus on game by game, we had a great start and then stuff is falling off, and we’re just looking to get back to it and get back in the win column,” Hutchinson explained.

Hopefully, for Hutchinson and the Mustangs, the organization’s family members can will them to a pair of wins this weekend.

These next two days in Melfort, it’s family weekend for the club.

“It’s gonna be a great atmosphere here, and hopefully, we get a win for parents and our family, it’s going to be fun,” Hutchinson added.

Opening faceoff is slated for 7:30 p.m.
