Hawks fly into Melville for meeting with Millionaires

Nov 21, 2023 | 12:00 PM

The Hawks hit the highway Tuesday to Melville for a matchup with the Millionaires in Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) action.

Nipawin evened their regular season record with a 2-1 win over the Mustangs in Melfort on Friday. The victory was appreciated by Head Coach Tad Kozun as the team finished up three games in a three-day span.

“We talk about our starts kind of being our Achilles heel right now; we take a penalty seven seconds in on a nice hit. We were able to kill it off and roll from there,” Kozun reflected.

Ronan Buckberger opened the scoring with a power-play goal in the first period at the Northern Lights Palace. Braeden Jockims scored the game winner in the second period before the Mustangs got a late power-play goal to bus the shutout bid of Damon Cunningham who made 43 stops in the win. Kozun said it’s nice to see younger players lead the way offensively from time to time.

“Sometimes it’s nice when you get contributions right through your lineup. Jockims came in and really added some jump to our lineup. Ronan just keeps doing his thing. It’s one of those things you expect now,” Kozun said.

Tuesday’s game at the Horizon Credit Union Centre is the second of six meetings between the clubs. The Hawks won the first game 4-2 on Nov. 7 at the Centennial Arena.

Nipawin will conclude the month of November with three more road games including the Melville game, and a home ice showdown with the Battlefords on Saturday before an eight-day break. Kozun said he needs his club to build some momentum going into a much-needed rest.

“We have to find that consistency to put some wins together,” Kozun said. “We’ve been better of late, but we still expect more, and I expect the guys to be ready to go tonight.”

Faceoff is slated for 7 p.m., the pregame show of Duplex Furniture and Appliances Hawks Hockey begins on 750 Beach Radio at 6:45 p.m.
