Mustangs snap North Stars’ 10-game win streak

Nov 23, 2023 | 12:09 PM

For the first time in over a month, the Melfort Mustangs have won multiple games in a row.

This came after an 8-5 victory over the Yorkton Terriers on Saturday, followed by a 3-1 win against the Battlefords North Stars on Wednesday.

Melfort’s most recent win also ended a 10-game winning streak for the North Stars.

“We knew it was gonna be huge coming, they had a nine or 10-game win streak and nobody comes in our barn and walks all over us, so it was just a gritty, all-around effort from everybody and I thought we played great tonight,” said Mustangs’ forward, Kaleb Binner.

“We want to bring that attitude and effort to every game, trying to snap their streak added a little bit of motive, for sure, so I thought everybody was rolling, everybody was putting in the hard work and we got the two points.”

The Stangs are now 2-0 against the defending champions this season, as the two now won’t play again until March, for a weekend double-header in the Battlefords.

Wednesday marked the first time this season that the Blue and Green got to face the league’s reigning MVP in Kian Bell, who they shut down for the most part.

It wasn’t until they were already up 3-0 with less than eight minutes to go in the third, that Bell solved James Venne for the first and only time of the evening, as the Stars were on a 5-on-3 powerplay.

“They got the best player in the league and he does a lot for their team, they’re a pretty good team overall, so props to them, but I felt we did a really good job against him and that was the role of the game today, just go in and out hit and outwork them and we got it done, so that’s good,” Binner added.

The contest marked the first of four consecutive games for the Mustangs, where all their opponents are above them in the standings.

Binner explained that Wednesday’s matchup was a good start and that they have to keep it rolling.

“It’s huge to start off on the right foot, going into two games with Humboldt, they’re a pretty strong team and then we got Flin Flon next week, but we were just worried about tonight’s game and now we have to move forward and go get the next three,” he told northeastNOW.

Melfort is now 14-7-2 on the year, good for fourth in the SJHL and second in their division.
