Mustangs host Broncos for first matchup this season

Nov 24, 2023 | 12:54 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will begin the first leg of a home-and-home set Friday night when they host the Humboldt Broncos.

The meeting will also be the first of six between the two rival clubs, who currently sit third and fourth respectively in the league standings.

Despite the close proximity to each other, Humboldt is actually the last team in the group that Melfort has yet to face this season.

One of the Mustangs, however, has already seen the Broncos this year during his earlier tenure with the Weyburn Red Wings.

“They’re a real strong team, they’re real quick, and they’re pretty relentless on the forecheck,” said defenceman Nolan Henderson. “I think we have to be crisp with our passes and keep our structure in the d-zone and make sure that they can’t capitalize on their chances. We also have to bury ours, so we’re excited for the test.”

The Blue and Green did matchup with the Green and Gold back in the preseason and came away with two overtime victories (4-3 & 3-2).

A lot of course has changed since then as the actual rosters have been shaken up and fully put into place.

For the Mustangs specifically, this game marks their second of four in a row against teams above them in the standings.

“I think for sure it gives us a little bit of jam playing those guys ahead of us, we definitely want to catch those guys at some point and hopefully, we can steal a few points and end up catching those guys in the standings,” Henderson added.

Melfort won their first game of said stretch on Wednesday when they took down the Battlefords North Stars, 3-1, which ended their 10-game win streak.

It also gave the Stangs their second consecutive victory, which was a feat they previously hadn’t accomplished in over a month.

Now, they are searching for their third win in a row which they haven’t done since they began the year on a seven-game heater.

“We just got to keep the momentum going tonight, we played a really good game and had some good structure on Wednesday, so I think the boys are ready to play Humboldt and we’re gonna try and steal two points from them,” Henderson told northeastNOW.

Friday night’s opening faceoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. at the Northern Lights Palace.
