Mustangs searching for continued dominance against league-worst Hounds

The Melfort Mustangs are hoping their dominant stretch against the Notre Dame Hounds continues this weekend, as the two clubs are set for a home-and-home matchup.

Melfort has played the league-worst Hounds twice already this year beating them by a combined score of 11-2, while outshooting them 98-48 in the process.

Although the Mustangs have had previous success against Notre Dame, according to captain Leith Olafson, they’re not taking the pair of games for granted as they want to bounce back after Wednesday’s loss in Flin Flon.

“They can be a little dangerous if you’re not ready to play, so I think we’re gonna show up today ready to go and everyone’s focused on getting two points tonight,” he said.

“We had a tough loss up there in Flin Flon, so I think it’s best for the boys just to wake up today and get ready to go against Notre Dame. It’s a big bounce-back weekend for us, so it’ll be good to get our mojo back and get rolling again.”

Against the Bombers on Wednesday, the Stangs got off to a rough start, which ultimately cost them the game.

As far as this weekend goes, they’re focused on not making the same mistake and making sure that it’s them who gets off to a hot start.

“It’s gonna be a big start for us today, so we’ll just try and get the boots moving again and get our speed going so we can really take it to this Notre Dame team,” Olafson added.

The Blue and Green are coming off one of their toughest stretches of the season, in which they played four in a row against the three teams ahead of them in the standings: the Battlefords North Stars, the Humboldt Broncos, and the Flin Flon Bombers.

The organization went two and two during those games which included Kristian Coombs’ first career SJHL victory against the Broncos.

“It was a tough four games, good for character, and got a few wins there, which was nice, but it’ll be good to get back into the swing of things and get our momentum going again,” said Olafson.

Coombs will get the start again tonight, as number-one netminder James Venne takes a breather after facing 52 shots last game.

Puck drop between the Stangs and the Hounds is set for 7:30 p.m. on Friday before the two meet again on Saturday in Wilcox at the same time.
