Agriculture Roundup for Thursday December 7, 2023

Dec 7, 2023 | 11:57 AM

Despite months of discussion, industry members have yet to sign the Grocery Sector Code of Conduct.

In a joint statement, Agriculture and Agri-Food Minister Lawrence MacAulay and André Lamontagne, Quebec’s Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, said after years of work, broad consultations, and unprecedented engagement across the grocery supply chain, they were disappointed to see that it still has not been launched and that supply chain partners are hesitant to move forward.

The ministers went on to say Canadian families are struggling with the cost of food and major grocers and all supply chain partners should adopt and adhere to the Code.

MacAulay and Lamontagne said they would be reviewing all possible options available.

If attendance figures are a measure of success, Canadian Western Agribition organizers must be pleased.

There were 142,807 people at last month’s show. That’s the highest attendance since 2005 and up 19 per cent from last year.

Agribition CEO Shaun Kindopp said the number reflects the hard work done to continue to grow the show.

“We are humbled by the support we received this year” Kindopp said. “Agribition is all about bringing people together, and we thank everyone who chose to spend their week with us.”

The show featured many new initiatives including Miss Rodeo Agribition, the Canadian Animal AgTech Awards, and Freestyle Bullfighting.

Agribition returns from Nov. 25 to 30, 2024.
