2023 Over

Mustangs finally beat Hawks, head home happy for Christmas

Dec 17, 2023 | 4:51 PM

The Melfort Mustangs have now beaten every SJHL team at least once, so far this season.

The last team they had to beat was their archrival Nipawin Hawks, who were previously 3 and 0 against them.

Saturday night they did just that, as they pulled away with a 4-1 victory at the Cage.

“That’s a huge win, it’s tough playing in the cage and they beat us last night, so we came here today, we had a good head on our shoulders and we were gonna come to work for our last game before the break,” said Stangs’ assistant coach Tye Scherger.

Not only did the Mustangs avenge their defeat from Friday, but they also got back in the win column after having their six-game winning streak and perfect month of December snapped.

Melfort now has at least a point in their last eight games, which all came in the final month of 2023, as they head for their Christmas break.

“We were on a six-game heater there and you lose and you think the guys would just shut down for the break, everyone was positive and ready to get to work, and I gotta give a big shout-out to Venner, he came in and he worked hard and I’m very proud of him,” Scherger told northeastNOW.

James Venne was huge in the Blue and Green’s win, as he had 38 saves on 39 shots, stimying the Hawks to just a 1 for 7 powerplay.

The contest marked the final game of the 2023 calendar year for both the Stangs and Nipawin, as the teams are looking forward to nearly three weeks off.

For the Mustangs, they are hoping to get some rest and heal up some of their players who are currently injured.

And according to Scherger, all things considered, he is quite happy with where Melfort stands as of right now, tied for second place in the SJHL standings with a 22-9-3 record.

“A bunch of character guys in there, they come to the rink every day and they work, we got good leaders in there, we got a great group of guys and they’re excited for the new year,” added Scherger.

“We’ll have everybody back and healthy and they’ll be very dangerous.”
