Broncos acquire Russian forward from Toronto

The Humboldt Broncos have acquired some forward depth of the international variety.

The SJHL club made a trade with the Ontario Junior Hockey League’s (OJHL) Toronto Jr. Canadiens on Wednesday, grabbing Boris Kofman in exchange for future considerations.

Kofman, a 2004-born player, has 10 points in 32 games for the Canadiens so far this season.

This year marks a first for the 19-year-old Russian/Canadian citizen of playing Junior A hockey in Canada.

“Boris is a player we have tracked since last season. He plays with incredible pace and always with a 200-foot mindset,” said head coach and general manager, Scott Barney.

“He’s a left-shot forward who can play both centre and wing, so that versatility is a great advantage, and we also feel he’ll bring added offence with the team we have.”

Prior to this season, the 5’10”, 178 lb forward played the entirety of his junior career overseas.

From 2019 -2022, Kofman played in both Sweden’s and Russia’s junior hockey systems.

In the 2021-22 campaign, he suited up for the top U18 league in Sweden putting up 17 goals and 12 assists, good for 29 points, in just 15 games.

Meanwhile, in 2022-23, he made the jump to the J20 Region, which is the highest junior level in Sweden, dressing in 25 games and registering 19 points for Huddinge IK J20.

In other Broncos news, Ben Costantino was named the SJHL’s DirectWest Rookie of the Month for December.

The blueliner climbed to the top of the league standings when it came to scoring among rookie defensemen.

Constantino now has nine goals and 18 assists on the season, good for 27 points.

Eleven of those points came last month, as he found the back of the net four times while adding seven helpers.

The 2005-born St. Albert product was in the lineup for Humboldt just six times during that span, as he nearly averaged two points per game during that stretch.
