Check It Out! What were the most loved library books of 2023?

Jan 12, 2024 | 5:00 PM

Popular movies and television shows prompted people to check out their local libraries in 2023.

Wapiti Regional Library, which services locations around surrounding, Melfort, Nipawin, Shellbrook, and Sturgeon Lake, shared which books were the most borrowed from last year.

The library service separated the books into different categories: Adult Fiction, Non-Fiction, and Young Adult Fiction.

Taking the top spot for Adult Fiction was ‘It Starts With Us’ by Colleen Hoover. The romance novel is a sequel to the 2016 book ‘It Ends with Us’ and centres around the relationship between Lily and Atlas.

The top Young Adult Fiction booked checked out was ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’, which is currently a series on Prime Video.

Kaleb Dahlgren’s book ‘Crossroads: My Story of Tragedy and Resilience as a Humboldt Bronco’ was the top non-fiction book checked out, followed closely by Prince Harry’s autobiography ‘Spare’.

When it comes to why these books became so popular in 2023, Lindsay Baker with Wapiti Regional Library noted the books being checked out or the authors behind them have had their works brought to the small and big screens.

“Titles that are maybe older in book format, they come back to people’s mind and get popular again in book form,” she said. “When people know that there’s a movie or TV show coming out or they’ve seen the movie or TV show [and] find out it’s a book and then want to go and read it.”

Coleen Hoover’s novel ‘Confess’ was made into a TV drama that premiered in 2017 while production is taking place for a movie version of ‘It Ends with Us’ starring Blake Lively and Brandon Sklenar in the top roles. It’s expected to be released in June. ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ has three seasons currently on Prime Video.

Wapiti Regional Library also checked out DVDs with all seasons of the hit show ‘Yellowstone’ and the Disney film ‘Encanto’ topping the list for 2023.
