Melfort Mustangs netminder James Venne had a great month of January, so much so that he was acknowledged by the SJHL as the SaskTel Goalie of the Month.

The Saskatoon product suited up for all seven of his club’s contests for the month, posting a 4-2-0-1 record in the process.

He also recorded two shutouts, with a 2.15 goals-against-average and a .927 save percentage.

The 19-year-old has been stellar all season, and especially of late, as the team has gone 7-2-1 in their last 10, as they chase the Battlefords North Stars for second place in the standings.

The three-year veteran now sits in third place among other goaltenders in save percentage, second in goals-against average, and tied for first in shutouts.

Meanwhile, the Mustangs organization also named its Three Stars of the Month for January, of which Venne topped the list.

The starting goalie won the Player of the Game award at home while accumulating three Star of the Game awards on the road.

Forward Aidyn Hutchinson picked up the second star of the month after he had five goals and an assist in seven games played, which included a hat trick against the La Ronge Ice Wolves to open January. Hutchinson is now tied for eighth in the league in goals.

Finally, Nolan Patterson received the third star after scoring twice in five games. The rookie forward tripled his scoring during the month.
