Mustangs, Broncos feature heavily in SJHL year-end award nominations

The SJHL has revealed the nominees for its year-end awards for 2023/24.

Melfort Mustangs netminder James Venne is up for a pair of awards.

He has been nominated for the SGEU Most Valuable Player award along with Spencer Bell of the Humboldt Broncos and Kian Bell of the Battlefords North Stars.

Venne is also up for SaskTel goaltender of the year.

Venne is 28-10-3-0 on the season, with a 2.71 goals against average and .909 save percentage.

Mustangs teammate Chase Friedt-Mohr is a nominee for the SuperU Defenceman of the Year award. He has 14 goals and 37 assists in just 49 games.

Zac Somers of the Mustangs and Evan Forrest of the Nipawin Hawks are nominated for the Star Egg Most SportsmanLIke Player of the Year. Somers has 32 penalty minutes, while Forrest has just six on the year.

Melfort captain Leith Olafson is up for RBC Community Player of the Year.

Spencer Bell of Humboldt is also nominated for Bourgault Forward of the Year and Canterra Seeds Saskatchewan Player of the Year along with teammate Mathew Van Blaricom.

Travis Bryson of the Broncos is up for DIrectWest Rookie of the Year.

Former Nipawin Hawk bench boss and current Melville coach Doug Johnson is nominated for the Saskatchewan Construction Safety Association Coach of the Year award.
