On a hot streak

Mustangs rout Hawks, end rivals’ postseason hopes

Mar 9, 2024 | 3:59 PM

The Melfort Mustangs had a bit of fun on Friday night as they got to send their most bitter rivals to the golf course a little early this season.

Melfort hosted the Nipawin Hawks and routed them with a 7-2 win, officially eliminating the Hawks’ postseason chances.

“It’s nice, of course going into playoffs you need that extra motivation, so going into playoffs it’s nice to have that and that’ll keep you going,” said Aidyn Hutchinson.

With the victory, the Mustangs now have eight in a row, which ties a season-long streak.

As the Stangs continue to try and clinch a top-two spot, Hutchinson told northeastNOW they need to keep playing their game.

“We came hot out the gates and I thought we were good all night keeping the puck in their zone and getting on the powerplay, so yeah, had a good night.”

It was also a bit less tiring of a night as the Blue and Green finally got to play with a full lineup.

While Hutchinson joked that meant less ice time, he was happy to see more of his teammates back and healthy.

“I don’t know, three lines is fun, you got lots of ice, but yeah, it’s a little easier for sure than last time, so you do have to make the most out of your shifts out there.”

On the docket now for the Mustangs is their annual awards banquet, which goes on Saturday night.

Melfort will celebrate their players and their accomplishments of the season, right alongside the community.

“We’re definitely looking forward to it, it’s always a fun time with your family, friends, and teammates, so it’ll be a fun weekend,” Hutchinson added.
