Hawks host Bombers as season winds down

Mar 10, 2024 | 10:00 AM

With the Nipawin Hawks not going to the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) playoffs, their season will wind down this week beginning Sunday afternoon versus Flin Flon.

The Hawks well officially eliminated from playoff contention on Friday after a 7-2 loss to the Mustangs. The team now has three games remaining including a matinee affair at the Centennial Arena against the Bombers. Nipawin Head Coach Tad Kozun knows his group and staff are extremely disappointed with this season’s results, but the players need to play hard for the final trio of games.

“We have fans and the community coming out to support us,” Kozun said. “The fans have stuck through thick and thin for this organization and this year is no different, we owe the fans a good showing this week, especially with a pair of home games on the schedule,” he said.

Nipawin has struggled with the explosive Bombers squad of late losing 10 straight games dating back to the start of last season. Flin Flon has been locked in top spot all season long and will be the top seed in the SJHL playoffs, but Kozun said for his younger players, gaining some confidence against an elite team, even with playoffs out of the question would help as the club works to build on next season.

“Right now, Flin Flon has the top roster and has been the team to beat all season, if we can put together a solid, hard working 60 minutes and knock them off this afternoon that would be a nice boost of confidence for our group, especially the guys playing for jobs next year,” Kozun added.

The team will have a skate with the Hawks after the game and a social. Kids are asked to bring skates and a helmet.

Faceoff is set for 3 p.m. at the Centennial Arena.
