As the Nipawin Hawks season winds down the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) team is continuing their preparation for next year.

The team announced on Thursday that they have signed 2006-born forward Ty Van Brabant to a Letter of Intent for next season. The Sturgeon County, Alta. product has suited up for the Fort Saskatchewan Rangers in the Alberta Elite Hockey League (AEHL) most of his career including the U18 AAA program this season. Nipawin Associate General Manager Dana Dirks said the team is ecstatic to have Van Brabant in the mix going forward as he plays the way the team wants to.

“He plays centre, he plays the game the right way, he finishes checks, you won’t see shy away from the corner work. Just a real high character kid,” Dirks said of the five-feet, 11-inch forward.

In 36 games this season in the AEHL Van Brabant had 12 goals and 19 assists plus 80 penalty minutes. In the U17 AEHL last year Van Brabant put up 22 goals in 31 games. He also has 20 games of playoff experience over the last three seasons. Dirks said that’s important for the team’s recruits.

“We’ve got quite a bit of that with the guys we’ve signed,” Dirks added. “They have all been regularly in the playoffs with their teams and had some success, we’re looking forward to that.”

Nipawin will play their final game of the season on Friday at home against the La Ronge Ice Wolves.

The Hawks awards banquet will be Saturday.
