“It’s going pretty well. It’s still a month-to-month basis… Melfort’s fundraising group is doing a lot to keep the doors open, and then we have the Nipawin group (that) has been helping out,” Strydom said.

The organization has also received some small grants which help the bottom line, but Strydom said the income from animal adoptions isn’t enough on its own to even cover vet bills.

The SPCA is also still looking for board members. Strydom said they have had three new members join recently, with one serving on the building committee, one focusing on memberships and helping at the shelter, and the other primarily dealing with fundraising.

Strydom said they could use a board member that can serve as a volunteer coordinator.

“We can cut a lot of costs by having more volunteers, it will really lighten the workload on everyone else.”

She added they could always use volunteers, whether they volunteer on the board, on a committee, or even to socialize cats or other shelter-based activities.

The SPCA is also looking for someone to help with computer and IT work. Right now they rely on someone who occasionally comes in from Saskatoon to help.

The organization will host a pet walk in August, while they’ll hold a gala event in November. Strydom said the Smile Cookie campaign that benefits the SPCA will start on Friday, and she asks people to support their various fundraisers.

The public is invited to attend the AGM, which starts at 7 p.m. at the Harry and Eve Vickar Shelter.
