Mustangs look to keep perfect home record alive this weekend against Broncos

Apr 4, 2024 | 5:00 PM

The Melfort Mustangs will welcome the Humboldt Broncos to the Northern Lights Palace on Thursday and Friday night for Games 1 and 2 of their SJHL semi-final series.

The closely located rivals seem quite eager to battle for a spot in this year’s championship series, as they very badly want to leave one another in the dust.

“Yeah, we can’t wait to go beat those guys,” explained Mustangs defenceman, Nolan Roberts. “We’re gonna beat them in every single way we can.”

Those words come from a guy who has extra animosity toward the other lone horse team in the league, as some injuries have come from previous meetings this season.

Roberts was sucker-punched by Cage Newans, resulting in a broken nose, while Ty Thornton was slough-footed by Connor Miller, resulting in the end of his year due to a collarbone injury.

The likely upcoming physical series between these two teams and its result may vary on who has the better travelling fanbase.

Both clubs are perfect at home so far these playoffs, while Humboldt also has yet to win on the road.

“Obviously it’s big for us starting at home, we secured that second spot over them, we’re second place and they’re third, so it’s good to know that and I think it’s important. Ultimately though, we plan on going into their barn after we get the job done in ours and we’re gonna do the exact same thing there,” Roberts added.

Melfort has been able to rest up and prepare a little bit during the past week, as they last played on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Broncos just wrapped up their seven-game series on Tuesday night, therefore having only one day in between Rounds 1 and 2.

For Roberts and the Blue and Green, he believes their opposition will be tired, while his club still feels the momentum of advancing past the first round.

“They had to play seven games, we had to play five and they played two days ago and we’re gonna come in rolling with a bunch of fresh bodies and take it to them,” he told northeastNOW. “We still have that confidence from round one… feels like it was just last night that we won.”

Humboldt enters the seventh meeting of the season having won four of the previous six.

Game 1 of Round 2 begins with a 7:30 p.m. puck drop and a 7:15 p.m. Suncrest College pregame show on 105 CJVR.
