TMSS students hold Friday protest in support of teachers

Apr 12, 2024 | 3:46 PM

A handful of high school students from Tisdale Middle & Secondary School (TMSS) weren’t in class on Friday, in support of their teachers.

The student-organized protest began around 9 a.m., as they also went against the STF because of the recent sanctions.

“Our protest is going really well, there’s been a lot of support from the people driving by and they’re all honking their horns, so it’s been going really well,” explained Grade 10 TMSS student Preston Keen.

“There’s about 20 or 30 of us here right now and we’re protesting to support our teachers because they’re not really with the STF on the sanctions that they’re setting up. It’s forcing us to have to give up stuff, so we’re striking against the STF in support of our teachers.”

For Keen and his classmates, the STF sanctions have taken away their lunch hour, which means the inability to go home and take a break to recharge their batteries and prepare for the afternoon.

Meanwhile, Keen as a football player, can’t go to his workouts anymore to help him progress in his sport.

“We’re supporting them because from what I’ve noticed, most of the teachers in the school don’t really agree with the STF sanctions, and they really don’t want to do it but they’re being forced into it by the STF,” he added.

“We haven’t really had any teachers able to stop by because they’re all in class, but the community has been really good with supporting us, as well as some out-of-towners who are coming for the rodeo this weekend, so we’re getting a lot of support from everybody.”

Keen believes schools in Nipawin and Carrot River are doing the same, and heard that Melfort was planning to as well, but was advised not to by their principal.

He also told northeastNOW that students had been talking about protesting since the strikes began and that the newest STF sanctions made them pull the trigger.
