Nipawin fire crews battle pair of blazes

Apr 16, 2024 | 12:00 PM

Monday night was a busy one for the Nipawin Fire Department (NFD).

The first call happened during firefighter training, which had to be put on hold.

Crews had to respond to a significant grass fire, but the fire department expressed their thanks to the community for their help in containing the blaze by using tractors, discers, and teens with shovels on quads.

The NFD was busy with the final hot spots of the first fire when they got a call about a power pole on fire 50 kilometres south of Cumberland House, as Cumberland House fire crews were battling a blaze at their airport.

This fire south of Cumberland House was thankfully almost out by the time crews arrived. (Facebook/Nipawin Fire)

NFD crews found a long strip of grass along the power lines which burnt, and there were still some glowing embers in the tree line. The fire itself was out and crews saturated the area as a precaution as the rain started to fall.

Crews returned from that call at about 1 a.m. on Tuesday.
