A man who committed a double murder at James Smith Cree Nation, has received two concurrent life sentences and is not eligible for parole for 16 years.

Shawn Moostoos, 36, appeared Monday morning at Court of King’s Bench in Melfort.

The case was originally scheduled for trial, however guilty pleas were instead entered to two counts of second degree murder and attempted murder. A fourth charge relating to discharging a firearm with intent to endanger life was stayed by the Crown.

The case dates back to September, 2021 and a shooting incident that occurred at James Smith Cree Nation that prompted RCMP to issue an emergency alert.

A 37-year-old man and a 28-year-old woman, both from the community, were killed, and a 44-year-old man was transported to hospital with what was described at the time as serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Moostoos was arrested the following day in Melfort. For the attempted murder charge, he received 10 years and that will run concurrently to the two life sentences.

The names of the deceased have not been released, but police previously had confirmed the suspect and the three victims were known to each other.

This is a developing story. paNOW will have more details in the coming days.
