Nipawin’s Chorney signs scholarship and development agreement with WHL’s Giants

May 22, 2024 | 5:27 PM

A Nipawin native is excited for the next chapter in his promising hockey career.

Blake Chorney has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the Vancouver Giants, the team that selected him 10th overall in the 2024 WHL Prospects Draft earlier this month.

“(It’s a) really exciting day for me and my family,” Chorney told northeastNOW.

The 2009-born forward had 42 points in just 24 games for the Northern Alberta Xtreme in the U15 Prep division this past season, and followed that up with 12 points in five playoff games.

“As an organization, we are thrilled to see Blake sign the Education and Development Agreement with the Vancouver Giants,” Giants General Manager Barclay Parneta said in a news release. “His talent, work ethic and dedication make him a great fit for our team. We believe he will be a key contributor to our success in the future.”

Chorney said he’s been watching the WHL since he was young, and getting drafted and playing in the league in the future will be a dream come true. Playing for an organization like the Giants excites the Nipawin product.

“They were…the most interested I would think, and it was great that I landed there. They have a great organization there.”

Chorney believes his style of play is strong at both ends of the ice.

“I…play a good 200 foot game, I feel like I’m a shot-first guy, move the puck to the right man and play physical, try to play my role, whatever that is, and fit into the lineup well,” Chorney explained.

Chorney will play for the Saskatoon Blazers in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League for the 2024-25 season, and he’s excited to join a team that has won back-to-back league titles.

“I think they have a great organization there. It’ll hopefully be a good year and it’s really exciting to play with them too.”

Chorney also thanked his billet parents, friends, and family for helping him achieve success, and he said he hopes to keep making them proud.
