The Nipawin Hawks had a busy day at the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Draft picking nine players and moving a veteran defenceman.

Early in the draft Tuesday afternoon Nipawin announced they sent 20-year-old former Western Hockey League (WHL) defenceman and three-year Hawk Tre Fouquette to Humboldt for four draft picks. Associate General Manager Dana Dirks said with a young roster being developed for the upcoming season the offer of a pair of first round picks and another two in the second round was too much to pass up.

“With Tre being a 20-year-old it’s a chance for him to go somewhere else and for us it was a trade hard to turn down with where we are at. That’s a tough return to pass up on,” Dirks said after the draft.

The Hawks had two selections from the 2009 age group, the team chose Carson Park, a high scoring forward from Pilot Butte fourth overall, and at 16th overall the organization welcomed Saskatoon defenceman Matt Henkelman.

Nipawin took goaltenders in the draft selecting Cade Mitchell of Gull Lake, Sask. with one of the picks the team acquired from the Broncos in the Fouquette deal. The Hawks also drafted Madex Kabrud from Saskatoon, and the U18 AAA Blazers. Dirks said already with a crowded crease going into this season, you can never have too many netminder options.

“We definitely have the cupboards full there, that’s something we were really looking at because you just never know who is going to end up in the WHL. There is lots of guys looking for goalies and we feel we have some quality ones,” Dirks said.

With the team’s first choice at fourth overall in the 2008 age group Nipawin selected Jeremy Wehrens from Saskatoon. The Hawks also drafted forwards Porter Nickason (Elrose, Sask), Taren Erhardt (Warman, Sask.), Cohen Van Horne (Saskatoon), and Brady Ruhr (Regina).

Overall Dirks said the staff is pleased with how the day transpired and the team is excited to begin working with all the prospects.

“We had some good conversations with them at our camps, we are really happy with the players we were able to select today. This is all just the start for all of them on what they put in for work over the next year or two,” he concluded.
