Small tax increase in Nipawin

Jun 12, 2024 | 3:36 PM

The town of Nipawin has set its mill rate for the year.

Council passed the new rate at their meeting on Monday.

The new mill rate is 7.5245, a slight bump from last year’s rate of 7.27.

Chief Administrative Officer Michele Sorensen told northeastNOW administration did their best to keep the increase as small as possible.

She said a residential property worth $200,000 last year would have had a tax bill of $3,529, while a property worth the same amount this year will pay $3,576.

“It’s not a huge increase on all of the properties,” Sorensen said. “We were fortunate that we were able to keep the budget increase fairly small.”

Sorensen added council and administration worked together to try to keep the increase to a minimum.

“Finding efficiencies wherever we can and applying for funding opportunities.”

The agricultural mill rate factor was also increased to 0.92, which is the same as residential. Sorensen said that only applies to a handful of properties on the edge of town. The commercial base tax remains the same at $1,800, but Sorensen said the town shifted the land to $1,750 and $50 on improvements. Sorensen explained that was done in an effort to encourage development on vacant properties.
