College of Physicians and Surgeons looking into allegations against Melfort doctor

Jun 18, 2024 | 3:10 PM

A Melfort physician faces potential discipline from the Colleges of Physicians and Surgeons of Saskatchewan (CPSS) Discipline Committee.

The charges against Dr. Robert Steffen were filed on June 8.

On one instance on Feb. 3, 2019, Dr. Steffen is alleged to have “struck a nine-year-old child in the face for disobeying a direction.”

It’s also alleged that in Feb. 2023, an eight-year-old patient was at an appointment with his mother. The CPSS alleges that the child was not cooperating and began to pull on some equipment. Dr. Steffen is alleged to have pulled the patient off the bed by his arms, placed him on the ground, spanked him across the buttocks area, and forcibly placed the child back into the chair.

Another charge centres around Dr. Steffen inappropriately prescribing himself medication on “one or more occasions” between 2019 and 2023.

He was the subject of a complaint to the CPSS that alleged he had self-prescribed medication, was notified of it and given a chance to respond to it.

The CPSS said Dr. Steffen responded to the College by letter, but they allege the letter was false and/or misleading as to one or more of:

1. The number of times the doctor had self-prescribed medication

2. The types and/or number of medications he self-prescribed

3. The reasons for and/or circumstances in which he had self-prescribed medication.

A message has been left for Dr. Steffen by northeastNOW regarding the accusations. The charges have not been proven.
