Sleeva commits to Red Deer Polytechnic Kings

Jun 25, 2024 | 11:20 AM

Former Melfort Mustangs’ forward, Clay Sleeva, has announced where he will be playing hockey, come this fall.

The 2003-born product will join a handful of former Stangs in Central Alberta, as he pursues a post-secondary education with the two-time ACAC (Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference) defending champions, Red Deer Polytechnic Kings.

Sleeva will now be playing alongside the likes of Kevin Minnoch, Dawson Leroux, Nolan Doell, and Joel Favreau.

“Kings Hockey is proud to announce our final commitment for 2024-25,” the college said on its Twitter (X) page. “Welcome SJHL Champion, Clay Sleeva.”

The Canora, Sask. native played a combined 190 games in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League, posting 145 points over that span.

Sleeva played primarily with the Yorkton Terriers, even donning the ‘C’ on his chest, before being shipped to Melfort midway through his final Junior A season.

With the Mustangs, he was a massive piece of their championship team, putting up 37 points in 24 regular season contests, before adding 20 points in 18 postseason matches. Sleeva also posted five points in five games in Oakville, as the Blue and Green finished runner-up at the Centennial Cup.

“The ultra-competitive speedster put up 59 regular season points in 52 GP, then another 20 points in the Mustangs’ playoff run to the Centennial Cup Finals,” added Red Deer Polytechnic’s Twitter (X) post.

Sleeva, who also had a brief six-game span with the Tisdale Trojans, is a farm boy at heart and will likely be pursuing a degree in the agriculture field.

He isn’t the only northeast Saskatchewan player to commit to Red Deer in the last while, as former Nipawin Hawk, Alex Bernauer, announced his commitment last week.

The Kings had 16 SJHL veterans on their roster this past season.
