Drinking water advisory update

Hudson Bay PDWA remains in effect

Sep 11, 2024 | 1:00 PM

The lengthy Precautionary Drinking Water Advisory in Hudson Bay will soon be in its third week.

We’re learning more about what led to the advisory, and how the town is working to address the issue.

The Town of Hudson Bay’s social media pages have indicated the advisory “was implemented due to high turbidity levels caused by a mechanical issue in the Water Treatment Plant.”

The update said the initial mechanical problem was rectified, and an environmental protection officer has been working with plant operators to tweak the water treatment process, including chemical levels.

“Some of these adjustments have produced favourable results, and some have not,” said the social media post. The town said the adjustments that don’t work set things back a few days each time, and the sampling process to remove the advisory has not yet started.

The social media post said the town recognizes people are frustrated at the duration of the advisory, and they ask for patience as they continue to work toward the solution.

Water Security Agency spokesperson Patrick Boyle told northeastNOW there are currently 77 Precautionary Drinking Water Advisories across the province, which is an average number for Saskatchewan. The most common cause is related to “system depressurization” — commonly known as a water line break.

Residents are advised to boil their water for at least a minute before consumption, or for using it to brush teeth, soak dentures, or to wash fruits or vegetables.
