Historic Knox United Church in Codette raising money for repairs

Sep 14, 2024 | 8:00 AM

An historic church in the Village of Codette is in need of some T.L.C., and residents are raising money to make it happen.

Knox United Church is nearly 100 years old and in need of repairs, as they look to straighten the walls and fix the rafters. The work is expected to cost thousands of dollars, and the church held a barbecue on Friday to help in their fundraising efforts.

Evelyn Baxter has been a regular at the church since her family moved to Codette in 1929 when she was one month old.

She told northeastNOW a lot of people in the congregation help to keep Knox United going.

“We work hard at it. There’s lots of programs that we do, like Father’s Day, Mother’s Day, lunches and dinners, and all of those kinds of things to try and keep everything moving,” Baxter explained. “We’re lucky to have such a wonderful congregation that really pitch in, everybody helps.”

Knox United Church is an important building in the history of Codette. Baxter said the church was built in 1925 and 1926, with doors opening the following year.

“It was built with one contractor and volunteer labour,” said Baxter.

The church holds a special place in Baxter’s heart, and she joked that perhaps the congregation is trying to keep it open and in good shape because she’s still alive to enjoy it. Baxter said she went to Sunday School in the church in her youth, and she later taught Sunday School, played the organ, and occasionally led the choir.

“I still try to help with everything as much as I can.”
