Mustangs head south for first-round rematch with Bruins

The Melfort Mustangs are on the road this weekend for a southern swing in Estevan and Weyburn.

Melfort will take on the Bruins to begin the swing Friday night, in a first-round series rematch.

The Mustangs eliminated Estevan in just five games in last year’s playoffs.

“We kind of have a rivalry there, we played them quite a bit last year in playoffs and it wasn’t an easy series. There were a lot of fights and scrums and stuff, so just gotta get the blood boiling. It’ll be a good game for sure, physical I assume, and it’ll be good fun,” said Melfort forward Austin Shepherd.

“They’re gonna come and give it their all. It’s our first game against them since, and their coaches are gonna tell them what happened last year. If we just come out hard and physical, I think we’ll be the successful team in the end.”

Melfort is already 2 and 0 on the young season, with wins in La Ronge over the Ice Wolves and at home against the Flin Flon Bombers.

Shepherd told northeastNOW the team is ready to continue racking up the wins, and is hoping this time around they can take the lead early in the game.

“We’ve kind of just picked up where we left off last year, and it was huge, little sloppy at times, but it’s early, so I mean glad we got the two wins,” he added.

“The start is the biggest thing for us, we’ve had to come back in both games so far, so it’d be nice to score the first goal this time. If we get a good start then we’ll have a good game. We’ve shown how much character we have though, by having to fight back and still getting the win.”

Shepherd scored his first goal as a member of the Blue and Green (also his first in the SJHL), against the Bruins.

Following tonight’s game in Estevan, the Stangs will wrap up their southern swing on Saturday against the Red Wings.

Puck drop for both contests is 7 p.m., with the pregame shows beginning at 6:45 p.m. on 105CJVR.
