Buffalo Party candidate hopes to make inroads in Humboldt-Watrous

One of Saskatchewan’s newer right-of-centre political parties has a representative in the Humboldt-Watrous constituency.

Megan Christianson is looking to become the first Buffalo Party MLA in the province.

Christianson is originally from the Nipawin area and owns and operates a private counselling service in St. Brieux.

She told northeastNOW she has always had an interest in social policy and advocacy and believes being involved politically can help her do that work with constituents.

“I chose the Buffalo Party because I really feel like it’s the party that gives people the most voice across the board because we don’t do the top-down structure,” explained Christianson.

The party hears from the people and then puts forward the policies, according to Christianson, and she agrees with their concerns about what she called the “sexualization of the sex education in the public school systems.” Christianson also backs the party’s opposition to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and their opposition to abortion. She said residents in the Humboldt area are largely pro-life, which she supports.

“I think that people in the area of Humboldt are looking for, many are looking for an option for a candidate to run who is going to continue to support more of that pro-life stance.”

Healthcare is a major topic of concern for Christianson, with many people in the constituency worried about finding and keeping family doctors. She said people also want local hospitals and clinics to remain open to limit travel to larger centres that are already overwhelmed.

Christianson said constituents are also concerned about increased costs and affordability issues.

“People have…a lot of concerns about how that’s going to affect their future, their children’s future, their grandchildren’s future. The cost to…purchase a home right now, people are struggling, especially young people, and they want hope, they want a better future where there (are) more possibilities for them.”

Christianson said she’s heard many of those concerns in her brief time campaigning, which she hopes to do more of in the remaining days leading up to the election.

According to the candidate, the Buffalo Party has also developed a plan to help seniors and would create a seniors health portfolio. Christianson said she is an advocate for mental health and doesn’t agree with how difficult it can be to access mental health and psychiatric supports.

Meanwhile, she said the Buffalo Party would repeal a policy that has people on social assistance directly getting money, then paying their rent after. She said a Buffalo Party government would ensure those rent payments would go directly to landlords.

There are also concerns from the party about the red tape faced by farmers and small business owners.

“That’s why we created the party, so that the West has more autonomy, and more of a voice.”
