A successful trip to nationals for Melfort’s Communities in Bloom

Melfort’s Communities in Bloom (CiB) group has had their best showing ever at the 2024 National Symposium and Award Ceremonies in Charlottetown, PEI.

The group earned a 5 Blooms Bronze rating at the event, finishing just behind the population category winner.

Volunteer Peggy George told northeastNOW the result was a huge success and a major accomplishment.

“Obviously we were hoping to be the winner of the category, but that will just make us work even harder next year,” George said. “We’re close, we’re going to do it next year.”

The Melfort group also received an Outstanding Achievement Award for the Municipal World Wildlife Award, and the Scott’s Youth Involvement Award.

There was also a special mention for the Goodman Family Walking Labyrinth at Spruce Haven Park. George said the Goodman family was on hand to talk to the judges during the visit.

“Brenda and Larry (Goodman) were at the labyrinth and had a visit with the judges and they were just so impressed with the whole concept and the structure…it definitely pulled some heartstrings.”

The Goodman Family Walking Labyrinth was constructed in 2014 in memory of Brenda and Larry’s daughter Lana.

George also said it’s always great to catch up with groups in other communities to hear their struggles and successes.

“Networking is always awesome, and we always learn something from them,” said George. She added the tours offered by the Communities in Bloom national office and the speakers also made the event a lot of fun.

Despite the Melfort Communities in Bloom organization’s success, George said they can’t do what they do by themselves.

“Our group isn’t getting any bigger, and we’re all getting a little bit older,” she explained.

George said it takes an entire community to help make Melfort shine, pointing to the efforts of the local woodcarver group, the revitalization of the Melfort Curling Club, and the hard work of the Melfort Museum volunteers as examples of making the city more beautiful.

“There (are) so many awesome things that are going on in our city; it’s not just what we’re doing, and we need to all keep working together.”

The organization is always looking for more volunteers, and anyone interested in helping to beautify Melfort can contact Peggy or any other CiB member.
