Hudson Bay implements virtual physician program

Nov 5, 2024 | 1:17 PM

The Hudson Bay Health Care Facility has implemented the virtual physician program.

The Saskatchewan Health Authority said in a news release the program helps provide residents of Hudson Bay and area with stable access to emergency room (ER) services.

The program is “a temporary measure that helps sustain and support access to emergency health services while the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) continues to stabilize health human resources, particularly in rural and remote communities,” the SHA said in the release.

The virtual physician program is designed to support the health-care team in Hudson Bay during times when doctors cannot provide on-site coverage.

The local health-care team can be connected to an ER physician in the province to assess, triage, and treat patients in the ER through the technology of HealthLine 811.

Porcupine Plain and Kelvington have also used the virtual physician program for ER services.

The SHA said people who need emergency services should call 9-1-1, and non-urgent health-related questions could be accessed by dialing 8-1-1.
