Six TDs by David Goudy leads Melfort Comets to provincial football title

Big plays helped lead the Melfort Comets to the 9-aside high school football championship.

Six touchdowns by running back David Goudy, including five of over 50 yards, gave the Comets an 86-27 victory over the Tisdale Tornadoes in the final in Melfort on Saturday.

Comets head coach Dave Rogers told northeastNOW after the game says he was happy with the win and the championship. He was quick to commend Tisdale on an impressive playoff run.

“Hats off to the Tisdale Tornadoes for today’s game,” said Rogers. “They climbed up the entire opposite side of the (playoff) bracket and they played a real hard game today.”

Rogers credited his squad for a strong performance against a team that they have played three times this season.

“Our kids put in the work, the effort, and the preparation, and it showed up today on the field.”

The Comets’ big-play offense was in full force from the beginning of the game, and the lopsided score was perhaps not indicative of the nature of the contest. Rogers said they have used that quick strike style of offense all season.

“David Goudy at running back, Brody Taylor at the slotback position, and Elias Kellington at quarterback…you combine those three guys together and it’s just big play after big play.”

Rogers said his defense played well throughout the game and commended their execution throughout the game.

“They didn’t give up any of the big plays in the first half,” said Rogers.

Eleven Comets ended their high school football career with a championship and gold medal, while eight Tornadoes graduated with a silver medal in the school’s first appearance in a provincial final since 1981.

Tisdale started the game with a lengthy drive that stalled around midfield, and on the first offensive play of the game Goudy cut outside to the left to ramble for a 55-yard touchdown run.

The Comets closed out the first quarter with a 14-0 lead thanks to a touchdown pass to Brody Taylor.

A 69-yard touchdown pass on a screen to Goudy led to a 21-0 lead, and a 67-yard TD run by Goudy made it 28-0.

The Comets’ running back scampered for an 80-yard run for another touchdown to make it 35-0.

Tisdale got on the board with a touchdown reception to cut the lead to 35-6, but Melfort scored on a third-and-goal to end the first half up 42-6.

Melfort recovered an on-side kick attempt by Tisdale to open the second half, and soon after a 1-yard TD run by Goudy expanded the lead by 7.

Tisdale gave up a safety to make it 51-6, while a 70-yard TD run by Goudy made it 58-6.

Melfort followed with three touchdowns to make it a 79-6 lead, but Tisdale showed a lot of heart by cutting the lead with a couple of touchdown receptions to make it 79-20.

Both teams exchanged touchdowns late to make it an 86-27 score.

Clavet beat Wakaw 90-51 in the 2A 6-aside final on Saturday, while Hafford upended Hanley 74-22 in the 1A final.
