Comeback kids do it again; Hawks rally in third to sweep Bruins

The Nipawin Hawks have shown plenty of resilience lately, but not to the level of Saturday’s comeback 4-3 win over Estevan at the ‘Cage.’

Capping the weekend that featured back-to-back games against the Bruins in Nipawin highlighted by hosting the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) team’s parent and billets, the Hawks won both games increasing their home winning streak to three games. Eric Hoiness scored the overtime winning goal, the 19-year-old second year Hawk scored the game winning goal in Friday’s win as well.

“It’s amazing, getting two wins, just proud of the guys,” he said after the game.

Captain Finley Radloff scored his second career SJHL hat trick in Friday’s win. On Saturday he was interfered with on a play and driven into the boards prior to playing a free puck in Nipawin’s zone. He was forced to leave the game. Assistant captain Henry Smith was also forced out with an injury. Nipawin only dressed 10 forwards to start, but never wavered. Down 3-1 in the third period, Ashton Tait and Konnor Watson scored in the third period to force overtime before Hoiness ended the game. He said the team competed all the way through the lineup.

“We battled as a team the whole way, down to nine forwards and I think five defenseman. It was a lot of skating, but I am proud the guys came through,” he said.

Estevan opened the scoring just 75 seconds into the game. The Hawks went down 2-0 in the second period before Carter Anderson jammed a rebound past Benny Polhill cutting lead in half. Estevan regained their two goal cushion going to the third period.

The Hawks got another powerplay goal early in the third period, tied the game near the halfway point and pushed for the winner in overtime, also on a powerplay. Hoiness said the victory was the biggest in his time with the team.

“I said to the boys after the game that was the best ever team win I have been a part of, it feels great,” he added.

The Hawks generated six powerplay goals over the two games and have eight against Estevan in three games this season, all wins.

Nathan Claydon earned the win in goal making 32 saves.

Nipawin is home to Yorkton on Tuesday.
