Year in Review: Curling Day in Canada event held in Melfort

Dec 28, 2024 | 4:00 PM

All eyes were on Melfort in February as the city hosted Curling Day in Canada.

Melfort’s strong curling tradition was highlighted during the event, as TSN and curling dignitaries came to the Northeast.

Two-time Brier champion Pat Simmons was at the event all day, teaching the game that he loves.

“I’m very happy to be here, personally, I have lots of good memories from Melfort as it’s where my team won our first provincial Tankard, so really nice to be back,” Simmons told northeastNOW during the event.

Simmons won his first Saskatchewan Men’s Tankard in 2005 at the Northern Lights Palace.

The 49-year-old is now a curling coach, and said Curling Day in Canada is all about introducing people to the sport of curling, and to have fun and enjoy what it has to offer.

While Simmons spent most of his time at the Melfort Curling Club, a variety of events were also held at the Northern Lights Palace, including inflatable curling and bouncy castles for the kids. The event also featured a live TSN broadcast from the Palace.

Curling Day in Canada wrapped up with a cabaret at the curling club.
