The Nipawin Hawks have signed Tisdale Trojans forward Sean Shiels to a Letter of Intent for next season and beyond.

Shiels, 17, was the Hawks second pick, 18th overall in the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League draft in 2023. In 29 games this season with the Trojans in the provincial U18 AAA league Shiels has 10 goals and 27 assists. He has also suited up for the Hawks twice already this season. Nipawin Associate General Manager Dana Dirks said Shiels hasn’t missed a beat in his young SJHL career.

“We’ve called him up twice this year and he hasn’t looked of place when he’s played for us,” Dirks said. “He’s going to be a big part of our roster moving forward.”

Currently playing in the Saskatchewan U18 AAA Hockey League with the Trojans, Shiels has played 29 games and produced 10 goals and 27 assists while being an assistant captain with the program. Shiels is a product of the Saskatoon Riverkings organization that plays in the AA U18 Saskatchewan league with a roster made up of 15 year olds. In the 2022-23 postseason Shiels played 14 playoff games and compiled 27 points including 10 goals. Dirks said the playoff pedigree is something the Hawks have focused on with their commitments.

“Every time you looked he was involved again, and again, and again when it mattered the most. That’s what you are looking for from your players, and he should get some more experience this year with Tisdale as they are having a pretty good year. He should get some more playoff experience in AAA and that should help us next year for sure,” Dirks said.

On the ice, Nipawin will return to action on Jan. 21 at home against Humboldt at home.
