Thevenot feels right in skipping role following semi-final finish at Provincial Playdowns

The Saskatchewan Curling Provincial Playdowns wrapped up this past weekend in Kindersley, with a northeast local skipping her team to a third-place finish.

Ashley Thevenot, who won last year’s tournament in Tisdale, as a third, had a much bigger responsibility this time around, one she feels comfortable and confident with to continue moving forward.

“We’ve had a little bit of time to reflect on it now and I think overall, the week went okay. Obviously, not the result we were hoping for, the week was kind of a bit up and down,” Thevenot said.

“I honestly loved skipping, I felt a bit of nerves at the beginning, but as soon as we got into that first game it began to feel more natural. We earned our place there and we were meant to be there and it just felt right being in the house and skipping the game.”

Thevenot and her team lost in the semi-final, to the eventual winners in Team Martin.

Nancy Martin and Thevenot’s team last year, with Skylar Ackerman, faced off in the finals in Tisdale.

This year, however, Martin had a completely different team.

“We faced them in the round-robin and that was a game of learning for us, and then we faced them again in the semi-final and lost. They were playing really well on Sunday and ended up getting the green jacket,” added Thevenot.

“We knew they were going to make some great shots and put some pressure on us. Nancy always makes some good ones too, so we knew we were gonna have to play well against them to come out on top, for sure. Just weren’t on the right side of the inch that game.”

Despite losing to Team Martin, by a score of 15-8, Thevenot’s group plans to cheer them on from home, when they go to the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in Thunder Bay, Ont. in less than two weeks.

There is even a connection to Team Martin, as Thevenot’s lead is related to Martin.

Following the Scotties viewing, Thevenot said the future of her team is still undetermined, as they have yet to have a team meeting and discuss their upcoming plans.

As of now, two things are clear, those chats will happen soon as each player reverts to their normal home and work life, and Thevenot will likely be skipping once again come the 2026 Playdowns.
