Mustangs snap two-game skid with season-series victory over Yorkton

The Melfort Mustangs have snapped their losing streak following a 3-1 win over the Yorkton Terriers on Tuesday.

After losing back-to-back games for the first time all season, Melfort made sure to respond in a big way.

“You go through those rough patches and it’s a reality check, so let’s get back to work. The boys went in, they put the work in, and it’s awesome to see. When you’re losing, you just work extra hard, you grind extra hard in practice, and it showed tonight,” said Mustangs’ assistant coach Tye Scherger.

“The first period was really good, we dominated. In the second period, for a little bit in the second half, we were kind of slow, and then in the third, we just dominated again, so it’s good to see the boys get the win again.”

Special teams were key in this game, as the Mustangs’ top-ranked units got back to work.

After a bit of a sluggish powerplay these past couple of games (0/9) the Stangs scored on their first two man-advantages of the night, eventually finishing 2/4.

Their penalty kill was also better, going 5/6, compared to 7/10 in the previous two contests.

“You obviously go through tough times as well when your special teams aren’t working that well, so we just went back to work and practiced it. It showed tonight with two powerplay goals,” Scherger added.

Tuesday’s win began a five-day stretch where the Blue and Green will play four games. On Wednesday, they welcome in the Weyburn Red Wings as another tough test awaits.

“We got a busy four in five nights, so we just got to stick to our game plan, stick to our game style, and we’ll be just fine,” explained Scherger.

Madden Mulawka made 27 saves in the victory over Yorkton, responding well after his first SJHL loss on Saturday.

Now 11-1-0-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL) on the season, Scherger told northeastNOW that Mulawka will be a go once again on Wednesday.

“He was just calm, cool, and collected tonight. It seemed like he was so dialled in that nothing could get past him. Good for him, he battled hard, and we’ll see him again tomorrow.”

Wednesday’s puck drop at the Palace is set for 7:30 p.m.

The matchup will be the third of four on the campaign, with each club having won a prior encounter.
